Sometimes, I catch myself saying something to my kids that I should be doing more of in my own life.
I’m often fond of telling my kids that they have to at least make an effort when it comes to getting the results they want in this life.
And yet, up until this year, I had never even made the effort to save money on the heating costs in my home. So it was time to take some of my own advice and do something about it. I was just like my kids when it came to the heating costs. I whined about the cost of heating with the gas furnace all winter but did absolutely nothing to rein in those costs. This past fall, I decided that I had to at least make the effort if I wanted to even have a chance of reducing the cost of heating in the winter. I’m very happy with our gas furnace as it does a great job and is an efficient piece of HVAC equipment. The problem was the house not the residential HVAC. Our house is older and while structurally in fantastic shape, gravity and time have caused gaps to form. So it was up to me to seal those gaps and my house tightened up to keep the heating in and the cold out. All I did was follow the step by step plan from the HVAC company website. It took a few afternoons over a few weekends but was really no big deal. Yet, I have been stunned by the reduction in heating expense. On top of that, the house is just so much more toasty over this winter. I’m so glad that I took my own advice and at least made the effort to save on heating costs.
