Starting at a new school

Today is the day for the beginning of the school year.

This isn’t an ordinary first day of school as my father and I moved across the country at the end of my last school year.

So new school and hopefully some new cool friends! I live within a few blocks from the school so I’m going to walk. I walked by it a few times during the hot summer. I never really got to experience air conditioning unless I went out for dinner, the grocery store or the rare occasion my dad took me to the movies. I kind of got used to the heat and I couldn’t imagine sitting in for hours at a time. Fall is coming soon and I helped my dad install an electric furnace. I know we’ll be warm during the winter at least! The outside of the school is very old looking, bricked, something straight out of the 60s! Walking in I feel a cooling sensation which I very much enjoy. I really don’t want to be feeling all muggy sitting at my desk all day. I see above me vents blowing out cool air. This place has central air so most likely I’m going to feel cold at some point. I’m so used to the heat! I put my stuff in my locker and start walking to class. Lots of new faces making sly looks at me. I understand I’m the new kid. While walking I bumped into another guy. We both apologized and he said his name is Michael. I told him my name is Darnell. He asked where I was heading. I looked at my card and said room 302, the teacher’s name is Mrs. Jankowski. He said we are heading the same way and we can go together.
